Patch notes explain what changed in a game update, patch, or hotfix. They can help you spot new content, balance adjustments, bug fixes, and technical changes—but the notes are a communication about an update, not the update itself. For a specific game, use the developer’s official notes and confirm which platform or build they cover.
What are patch notes?
Patch notes are documents that record changes made in a software update. In games, they commonly describe changes to gameplay mechanics and balance, additions or removals of content, bug fixes, and technical improvements. You may also see similar documents called update notes, a changelog, or release notes; a hotfix is a smaller, often targeted update, and its notes describe the changes it makes.
The distinction is straightforward: the patch or update changes the game; the notes describe or contextualize that change. Academic work treats patch distribution and patch notes as paired parts of online game updating. Notes can also use storytelling or rhetorical framing to explain changes, but styles vary between developers and documents.
What can you learn from them?
Read the notes for the changes that matter to your play: a character adjustment may affect your preferred strategy, a mode change may alter what is available, and a technical fix may address a problem you have encountered. A list of changes can help you judge whether an update is relevant to you, but it does not provide a universal measure of how much a patch will affect every player.

Researchers studying Dota 2 surveyed players, analyzed patch-note content, and examined character-selection behavior across more than 53 million matches over a 30-month period. Those figures describe that study’s scope, not a general measurement of patch-note impact across games, and they do not establish that a particular note caused a particular player behavior.
Where patch notes appear: Steam as an example
Where you find notes depends on the platform and publisher. Steamworks, for example, classifies game update events as Patch Notes, Regular Updates, and Major Updates. Its documentation describes Patch Notes as a format for smaller communications, with notes potentially appearing in the Steam client’s update view, a game’s News Hub, library details, and the store page. Developers can associate notes with a current or future build through the event editor.
Steamworks’ minimum fields for this publishing format are a title and description. Its documentation also describes an optional prompt encouraging developers to post notes when they submit a new SteamPipe build. These are Steam publisher tools, not requirements for all games or platforms, and platform presentation can change. Steamworks puts the player-facing effect of a build this way: “Every time you push out a new build to Steam, your players will see their game update in Steam.”
How to check notes for a particular update
- Start with the game’s official source. Look for its news, updates, or patch-notes page, or the developer’s official announcement channel.
- Match the platform and build. Check whether the notes refer to the PC, console, or other platform you use, and whether they are linked to the build installed on your system. Steam’s event editor supports linking notes to a build, but that is a Steam-specific feature.
- Check the publication date and update context. A later hotfix or platform-specific release may mean that an earlier set of notes does not describe your current version.
- Compare the listed changes with your question. Scan for relevant characters, modes, systems, bugs, or technical issues. Notes may not establish that every change is listed, so do not assume a document is exhaustive unless the publisher says so.
Why might official patch notes seem different?
A player has publicly asked, “Why are the patch notes on the official website different from the actual patch notes?” That question captures a practical issue, but one person’s post does not show how often discrepancies occur. Before concluding that the notes conflict, check whether the pages refer to different platforms, builds, or publication times. A game may also publish notes in more than one place, and not every page necessarily describes the same update context.
